Kidnapped at birth by an evil uncle in 1879, Lucas escapes to freedom with the help of a kindly captain of a merchant ship. He soon becomes a cabin boy and the captain’s protégé. But as the ship makes its way up the Carolina coast in 1895, a terrible storm strikes. The ship goes down leaving Lucas clinging to the shattered mast, the lone survivor.A“surfman,” Abner Peake of the U.S. Life Saving Service, brings Lucas into his home. For the first time in his life, Lucas has a real family. He dreams of becoming a surfman, like those brave men who rescued him.Soon, Lucas encounters the town bully, Jim. Jim’s father leads a gang of “wreckers,” men who intentionally lure ships onto the reefs where they crash and sink. The wreckers profit from the goods that wash ashore. Young Lucas must find the courage and will to stand up to the Dilks gang, and risk everything he has gained in a life or death rescue mission with the surfmen, leading to a surprising and life-changing discovery.
